CLASSICAL STUDIES EDITION
“I know of no story better than Quo Vadis to drive our young adults away from relationship as “mutual use and abuse” and into relationship built on the founding Christian principle: 'My Life for Yours.’” —Allison Ellis, Editor
The time is the first century A.D. during the decade of the Great Fire. The place is the Rome of the Emperor Nero.
Vinicius is a young aristocrat and soldier of the legions, a man of honor somewhat detached from the worst corruptions of Roman life yet bound up in their web of compromises and temptations. Into his life comes Lygia, a young woman of inflexible faith who has already converted to the furtive but growing cult of the risen Christ that has spread west from Palestine with remarkable speed in the roughly thirty years since the crucifixion in the mid-30s.
The story hinges on a decision. Vinicius must choose between the life he has known of service to imperial power and his utter devotion to Lygia. He cannot pursue both and the consequences for all are eternal. Onto the stage of this tale walk characters from both history and scripture—and the drama unfolds with relentless pace.
"Quo Vadis makes a fair and fresh claim in our day on the consideration of educated people—and of people who would wish to be so. It is due for reclamation in an age of thinning literacy and little faith.” —Tracy Lee Simmons, from the Introduction
